Shalom,
Though it feels sad this year too, Rosh Hashanah is a good time to ask: Where are we headed? The question becomes all the more critical in light of the deliberate abandonment of the hostages who are still alive by a ruthless government waging a war of destruction against the Palestinians and pushing the army to occupy Gaza. It is also the question that many Israelis have been asking themselves throughout this past awful year, as disaster follows disaster, mourning follows loss, and grief follows pain. Truly, one can no longer enumerate the long list of calamities this government has brought upon us. It is hard to breathe in the face of the harsh images, sorrowful news, and yawning gap between them and the monstrous indifference of Netanyahu and his allies toward human life and the suffering they are causing for the sake of “real estate in Gaza.”
Where are we going? Honestly, it depends on us. Though the atmosphere is not festive, the Jewish New Year still carries with it a message of hope and change. We are on the eve of an election year and a chance to start repairing Israel. Even if Netanyahu tries to sabotage the elections, manipulate them, and distort the results, there is a huge public here that will stand up to his efforts and ensure the elections are as should be: free, fair, and secret.
At Zulat, we intend to continue fighting against initiatives and laws that threaten democracy. Your support for us will enable us to begin a process of repair, rehabilitation, and healing. This is possible and within reach, and it can still be good here.
I wish you, your family, and friends that we should all live to see a proper democracy that ends the war, brings back the hostages, and establishes peace, equality, and justice.
Yours,
Zehava Galon
President of Zulat
