On May 26, 2025, Zulat’s Arabic media spokesperson Aaed Bader participated in the Internal Affairs Committee of the Knesset, in a discussion about another proposed judicial-coup bill aimed at directly undermining the right to vote and be elected. The bill seeks to expand the possibility of disqualifying parties and candidates by adding new and subjective criteria, the purpose of which is to distance Arabs from political participation.
This dangerous law lays the groundwork for political suppression of the Arab citizens of Israel and advances the Right wing’s ability to win without actually having to compete, by excluding voters. The law will allow circumventing High Court rulings interpreting party and candidate disqualification in a restrained and restrictive manner, and if it passes, heaven forbid, it will constitute another nail in the coffin constructed by the current government for Israeli Democracy.
Bader said: “This is persecution. This is harming democracy with a pincer movement – both in national and local politics. The proposal normalizes the limitations on the democratic space, this is part of an attack on democracy both in the Knesset and in the local authorities.”
