On January 3, 2025, at the Abraham Hostel in Tel Aviv, leaders of the struggle against the Media Takeover gathered for a discussion organized by The Seventh Eye magazine. The various speakers described the main threats posed by Netanyahu’s government to free media in Israel.
The meeting, moderated by Seventh Eye editor Shuki Tausig, included Zulat CEO Einat Ovadia; Advocate Didi Lahman-Meser, former Deputy Attorney General; Dr. Tehilla Schwartz Altshuler from the Israel Democracy Institute; Advocate Elad Man, legal advisor of the “Hatzlacha” organization; and Michal Gera Margalit, CEO of the Israeli Journalists’ Organization.
Excerpt from Zulat CEO Einat Ovadia’s remarks:
“I see our role, Zulat’s and civil society organizations’ in general, as that of watchdogs. We have a defensive battle that we must win. We do not have the privilege to stay out of it because even the smallest change that passes (legislation) will remain forever. There are constant attempts to seize public broadcasting. We blocked the appointment of retired Judge Drori to head the search committee of the Public Broadcasting Corporation because it was a political appointment. Once that had happened, the Corporation would have no longer been independent.”
